“In Our Wake" is a two-person show featuring work that celebrates the persistence of wildlife in a man-made landscape. Oil painter Perry deVick and sculptor/painter DemiGod each present a symbiotic complement to the other’s work. The artwork opens a window to an alternate Tampa Bay, one devoid of people. What creatures would come out of hiding? How would they interact with the trappings of human civilization without us around? This body of work is a deeper, darker imagining of traditional Florida wildlife.
“I have always been spellbound by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, its landscape, and its denizens,” deVick says, “So I envisioned what it might all look like without the intrusion of fast moving cars and disruptive people.” When DemiGod was brought into the project, her inspiration took her in a different direction.
“Saints, gods, and martyrs have been worshipped since the beginning of mankind,” she thought, and asked, “What if animals were venerated in the same way after death? This series explores what iconography and reliquaries would look like if the animal kingdom honored their ancestors in a world influenced by, but devoid of, the human race.”
